A FIRE crew from Okehampton and the specialist rescue team were called to rescue a cow stuck in Meldon Reservoir on Saturday afternoon.

The cow was stuck approximately 10ft into the reservoir.

A Dartmoor Ranger and vet were requested to attend, and the crews used a powered boat to gain access to the cow.

Mud mats, strops and a winch were used to rescue the cow from the water but due to its injuries, the vet was unable to save it.

l CREWS were called to reports of smoke leaking through a thatched roof of a property in Winkleigh on Friday evening.

Initially, crews from North Tawton, Chulmleigh, Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Torrington, Chagford and Crediton were sent to the incident.

On arrival of the first crews, it was confirmed that it was a chimney fire and the thatch roof was not involved.

Crews investigated the loft space and external areas with a thermal imaging camera and extinguished the fire using chimney gear and small tools.
