TWO fire crews from Tavistock were called to Lydford Gorge last Saturday, when a group of visitors got into difficulties.

Station officer Tony Clark said the party of adults with learning difficulties began to have problems with a particularly steep and slippery section of the gorge. The group, who were on holiday in the area, were safely led out of the gorge by the fire crews.

And two of Tavistock?s crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled a fire in an airing cupboard at a property in Chillaton on Tuesday. Mr Clark said the damage was confined to the airing cupboard ? the blaze was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

Meanwhile, Mr Clark said the response to a recruitment drive for new firefighters in Tavistock had been ?encouraging? during its first week and he looked forward to increasing interest as the campaign continued. Recruitment information boards have been placed in prominent positions throughout the town.
