RESIDENTS of Meavy Lane in Yelverton, who believe their road is used as a rat-run by local commuters, could soon see an end to their eight-year campaign for traffic calming measures.
Paul Marshall, Devon County Council traffic engineer, said a £45,000 scheme, funded by a local developer, had been drawn up by the council. 'There will be an exhibition next Tuesday, October 2, from 7-9pm in Yelverton Memorial Hall and council representatives will be there to discuss points raised by residents and other interested parties,' said Mr Marshall.
The scheme includes a speed reduction to 20mph alongside other traffic calming measures and covers the half-mile area from the shopping forecourt, past the old railway bridge to the double bends — taking in Meavy Lane and Gratton Lane.
Mr Marshall — who said it had not been easy trying to take into account all the different uses and problems of the road — expected that there would have to be modifications to the scheme following the exhibition.
If these are 'fine tuning' work should start in late autumn, but if more significant changes are needed this will be postponed to February or March next year.
'We would like to take on board the comments of the public — they have waited a long time and it's nice to be able to finally go ahead with the scheme,' Mr Marshall said.
