THE refurbishment of the chapel at Tavistock?s Plymouth Road cemetery last week sparked high praise for the staff who carried out the work. The town council?s works department have been involved in an extensive project at the cemetery, which will culminate in a special open day to be held in September. Cllr Norma Woodcock, chairman of the council?s finance committee, said the chapel was now looking ?extremely good?. Cllr Woodcock said: ?I think it provides a real alternative for people who want an informal setting or those who don?t have a parish church. ?It has been beautifully cleaned, all the pews have been re-stained, there is music ? it?s all very tasteful and provides a beautiful setting. ?It?s a lovely place to have a service and I suspect there are many people that don?t know how lovely it is. I know it has full approval from the clergy and has been made into a very nice, secular building ? I do congratulate the staff.? Town clerk Roger Howard said the chapel was ?100% better? even before the work was finally completed. ?We will be having an open day for the cemetery to show off the new public waiting room, the information room which was the old mortuary and the chapel itself,? said Col Howard. The open day will be held on September 14, when all are welcome to come along to the cemetery, view the facilities and inspect the grounds.
