THE people of West Devon are officially the leading recyclers in the West Country and the borough council is constantly striving to improve the service.
Of the 238 district councils across England, West Devon is in 14th place for recycling (not including composting.)
Not only do we have a weekly kerbside box collection for all residents, but we have just introduced plastic milk bottle banks across the borough too.
It means that residents can now use their boxes for glass, cans paper and card and recycle their plastic milk bottles in banks too.
Later this year we will be introducing a fortnightly kerbside collection for garden waste in selected areas, which will make recycling even easier and improve our composting rate.
The current recycling rate in West Devon is expected to be around 25% this year but we still have a long way to go to meet Government targets. However with the garden waste collections we hope to exceed targets.
Councillor David Morrish (Letters, April 22) is right to praise our residents for their recycling achievements.
We cherish the beautiful environment we live in and if we continue to Reduce, Re-use and Recycle it will stay that way.
Cllr Paul Ridgers
Chairman of the environment and health committee
West Devon Borough Council
