MORE facilities for recycling was the biggest issue for residents of Tavistock north ward, according to a recent survey.

The survey was organised by West Devon Borough Cllr Dick Eberlie on behalf of the Conservative Party, with around 2,200 leaflet distributed last November. More than 280 replies were received.

Questions were under four headings: help for young people; help for the elderly; waste collection and recycling; car parking and traffic movements.

On the recycling front, apart from 83% who said they would recycle more if there were facilities, there were many complaints about plastics no longer being collected.

Sixty per cent said there was not enough parking in town, with 66% wanting on-street parking for residents. Some wanted to see vehicles, apart from buses and taxis, banned from the town centre, others wanted free parking.

The proposed Manor housing development with access via the Dell was an area of big concern, said Cllr Eberlie, with fears including an increase in traffic flow in Old Launceston Road.

There were calls for increased grants to homes for the elderly, a subsidised senior citizen?s club and for shops and banks to have easier access without steps.

Almost half those replying thought more should be done for young people, with more mini and junior soccer pitches, a skatepark, better evening transport and a cyber café taking priority.

An athletics track was also suggested by several people, together with more park equipment for smaller children and a fenced-off zone in the Meadows.
