WHERE there?s muck, there?s brass . . . and if you compost your home waste, you?ll be saving money, recycling up to a third of your rubbish and helping the environment too!

West Devon Borough Council has teamed up with Tavistock and District Conservation Project to celebrate National Compost Awareness week by staging a sale of compost bins at discounted prices. The event is at Tavistock Farmers? Market on Saturday, April 26.

The first few people who buy a bin will receive an illustrated book, entitled ?Backyard Composting? worth £4.95 and a packet of giant sunflower seeds.

Home composting is a very effective way of re-using materials that would otherwise have to be disposed of and West Devon Borough Council, Tavistock and District Conservation Project (TDCP) and the Farmers? Market have teamed up to get the message across.

Spring is the perfect time to start composting and bins, wormeries, water butts and digesters will be for sale.

Peter Kent of TDCP said: ?Following a few simple rules will ensure an odour-free product that is easy to use ? and free! Proceeds from the sale of the bins directly benefit local groups and ultimately the local environment.?

The borough?s recycling officer Jane Savage will be on hand to offer general advice on waste reduction and recycling.

Timber products such as bat and bird boxes and greenhouse benches made from recycled materials will also be available. And after making fresh grocery purchases at the market, you can carry it all home in a bio-degradable bag supplied by the Farmers Market Association.

The market will take place in Bedford Square, Tavistock between 9am and 1pm.
