THE Tavistock Area Support Services Life Stories Project is in need of more volunteers to record the memories of older people. The project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has already taken many interesting accounts of life in Devon, the rest of Britain and in many parts of the world from recording the stories told by local people. The storytellers have been able to give vivid pictures of life in the 1920s and 1930s, experiences during the Second World War and post war Britain. Some people want to record just one or two memories, while others embark on their whole life history. Recently published memories of the First World War demonstrate how the experiences of individuals are of great value and the project aims to ensure that those who lived through the following decades leave a record of their experiences. The project's current team of 15 volunteers is fully occupied visiting people and recording their memories and there is now a waiting list of people who wish to have their stories recorded. Anyone who would like to volunteer will receive training and support. The new training course will take place over three Tuesday mornings, September 23, 30 and October 7, from 10.30am to noon at the Anchorage Centre. Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a volunteer or who may have stories they would like to record can contact Val Vines on 01822 610942.
