A WALKHAMPTON man is planning a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in August to raise money for the Tavistock section of the Dartmoor Rescue Group.
Chris Morley will climb the Kilimanjaro Shira Route, which is described as 'a challenging strenuous hike to the roof of Africa', over seven days in August.
Those undertaking the Kilimanjaro Challenge will arrive in Tanzania, on Saturday, August 10, and will set out from Londorossi Gate, the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park, the following day.
On the penultimate day, the trekers will climb from Arrow Glacier Camp to the summit at an altitude of 19,340 ft.
This will be following by five to six hours of steep descent, before the final part of the trek is completed on the last day.
This will not be the first adventurous trek Mr Morley, 55, has undertaken. 'I trekked to Everest Base Camp in Spring 2000 to 18,350 ft. That was the hardest thing I had ever done, particularly the final ascent. Kilimanjaro is 1,000 ft higher and I am two years older,' he said.
Mr Morley said he was looking forward to the challenge, and had been training since the beginning of the year to be prepared for the amount of walking.
The Dartmoor Rescue Group is hoping the money raised will go towards a new computer system for the rescue control section and an update to the emergency call-out pager system.
