TAVISTOCK College?s stunning new £3.4 million language centre was officially opened last week ? one of the most ambitious projects carried out to date by Devon County Council. The centre includes 16 new classrooms, a state-of-the-art drama studio and a magnificent sixth form study centre, all equipped with the latest technology and teaching aids. The centre was declared open by Cllr Des Shadrick, chairman of Devon County Council. Cllr Shadrick said: ?This is a major investment for this college ? and a major investment in this community, that will leave its mark for years to come. ?It?s something of which this town, and the county, can be truly proud and it gives me great pleasure to declare it open.? Colin Eves, Tavistock College?s new principal, said the school had been a language college for a long time and the international understanding and culture which had been fostered was one of its great strengths ? borne out by the fact that the educational attaché from the Japanese Embassy in London had come to the opening of the new language centre. Mr Eves said: ?The facilities we have here now are really facilities for the 21st century. When you walk into these classrooms and see the opportunities it makes you realise how exciting education is going to be in the future. ?We are celebrating what we have achieved here, but we are also looking to the future ? it?s the beginning of the next phase of the college ? it?s a fantastic facility but there are others we want to match to this.? Mr Eves said staff and students were ?delighted? with the new language centre and he paid tribute to everyone who had worked so hard to complete the project.
