AN epic Western shot on Dartmoor by a group of amateur film makers in 1977 is to get a rare showing in Belstone Village Hall this Saturday, April 5.
Fool?s Gold was conceived as a homage to the masterpieces of John Ford and Sergio Leone ? but it did not quite turn out as the film makers expected.
Director Chris Walpole said: ?We had these grandiose ideas ? but Fool?s Gold turned out to be a comic catastrophe more in keeping with Mel Brooks? Blazing Saddles ? mainly because of a hero who?d never ridden before and a horse that suffered from flatulence!
?I have shown it before and people seemed to think it was amusing, so we?re showing it again. It has live commentary, and sound effects with coconut shells etc!?
Chris said there were probably more hilarious situations off camera than were actually captured on cine film, which was relatively expensive in those days.
One example was when the action demanded a grave digging scene, complete with cardboard coffin. During this, the landowner appeared and was extremely suspicious of a group of men who appeared to be involved in highly questionable activities.
Fool?s Gold, digitally remastered by Chris Walpole, will be shown at 7.30pm in the village hall. Admission is free and refreshments will be available ? donations are invited towards hall funds.
