A TEAM from rescue charity RAPID UK has just spent four days assisting with the search and rescue of people trapped in the basement of demolished buildings in Jenin.

Director of the Okehampton-based charity Graham Payne said the crew had flown to the Middle East at the request of the United Nations and the International Federation of the Red Cross.

He said the area affected was the size of Exeter city centre and it had been a successful operation.

'There were reports of people still trapped after the buildings had been bulldozed and the crew was involved in rescue attempts and treating some of the children who had sustained injuries,' he said.

RAPID has been asked to go to Geneva to give a presentation to the UN on work carried out in Jenin.
