QUESTION: Which Tavistock Pannier Market stallholder organised 31 quizzes in 31 venues for every day in the month of October to raise money for a worthy cause?
Answer: Shaun McDermott, who runs the gift shop and engraving Pens and Moor stall, whose exhaustive effort is on target to raise a bumper £3,000 for St Luke's Hospice.
After working in the market during the day Shaun, from Horrabridge, has had not one evening off in the last month after setting up and being the quizmaster at 31 different venues which are within the St Luke's Hospice area — covering Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.
Some of his venues include pubs in Tavistock, Horrabridge, Mary Tavy, Callington and Bere Ferrers and his marathon effort culminated last Friday at a Hallowe'en quiz, 'the Final Chapter' at Tavistock Town Hall.
Shaun, along with his children Joe, Jade and Carrie, were very grateful to St Luke's Hospice for the care and treatment their staff gave to the children's mum before she died.
Shaun said: 'Nobody wants to be in that situation, but at the time St Luke's helped my family. They make the end of life for people as comfortable, painless and pleasant as possible. They do little things that you just wouldn't think of and they do it in such an unpatronising way.
'Many people may not know that 40 per cent of their patients are those their nurses care for in their own home. They are such an important part of the community.'
Shaun said he had no idea where the notion came from to organise 31 quizzes in 31 evenings.
'I wanted to do three things — raise money for St Luke's, make more people aware of their work and at the same time organise quizzes which will entertain,' he said.
When quizzed by the Times the Irishman said he just loved quizzes and the fact that more than 1,000 people had taken part and raised money for the charity was a reward in itself
His friend Becs Douglas of Tavistock praised Shaun for his exhaustive effort: 'He is such a lovely and caring man who, through his time and efforts, has not only raised money for St Luke's Hospice, he has brought a lot of happiness to people who have taken part in his fun events.'
Shaun himself said: 'I just want to say a huge thanks to all those who have taken part, to all the pubs and other venues.'
Question: 'What will quizmaster Shaun do after completing 31 quizzes in 31 consecutive evenings.
Answer: Stay in, sit on the settee with his feet up in front of the telly.
