'FABRIC Confabulation' is the title of an exhibition of quilts and wall-hangings made by the Upcott Valley Quilters, which is on display at the Salar Gallery, Hatherleigh, until October 2.
Many of the quilts, including The Dartmoor Quilt, are inspired by the Devon countryside and its flora and fauna, while other designs are inspired by a piece of unusual fabric, geometry, an event or a story.
One quilt was made by an individual member to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and was exhibited at Buckland Abbey as part of the Sea Britain celebrations.
'Fata Morgana' was inspired by the rich earthy colours of the desert and light and shade over curving sand dunes. Other themes include 'Under the Sea.'
The group of eight enthusiastic patchwork quilters from North West Devon was founded during 2004/5, and has for the last few years exhibited at the annual Quilt Exhibition at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
The Salar Gallery will also be showing some of the group's quilts made from some unusual fabric brought back from Birmingham.
The fabric is cut into eight equal pieces and each member of the group uses it to make a small quilt of a given size by a given time.
Sometimes they are left as eight small hangings and sometimes they are sewn together to make a larger hanging.
Entry to the exhibition is free and its open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.
