Kelly College students Bryony Christmas, Ben Brown and Molly Limb recently visited Exeter Cathedral to participate in a 'Question Time' styled debate with a panel of eminent public figures.
They included journalist, Richard Lappas; marine zoologist Prof John Spicer; member of the Queen's Council, Sir Richard Curtis QC; Assistant Chief Constable Paul Netherton and female canon at Exeter Cathedral Anna Norman-Walker.
The morning proved a valuable experience for the Kelleians and the chance to listen to professionals discussing prevalent matters of interest to them as students in England was gratefully received.
The question submitted by the Kelleians was, 'In view of the decision to reject the ordination of women bishops, would the panel agree that a wholesale reform is needed within the Church of England that reflects not just our multi-ethnic society, but also questions of gender equality?' It was the first to be raised to the panel and was received well, with Dame Suzy Leather, former Head of the Charities' Commission, commenting on the fact it was cleverly worded.
Canon Anna Norman-Walker responded by saying she was disheartened by the recent debate and felt bewildered and shocked by its outcome. She also agreed that, to a certain extent, reform was needed with regards to the question of gender and multi-ethnic equality.
The entire panel also agreed that the voting system within the church was in need of restructuring to offer fairer representation in reflecting our society.
Following this there were questions about possible privatisation of the police force, the relevance of climate change, whether restraints are needed with regards to the freedom of the press, disproportional acts of violence against intruders and embryonic and stem cell research.
All three students involved in the trip expressed thanks to Mrs Tranfield for taking the time and effort to organise the trip.
