BROADCASTER Fiona Bruce and the Antiques Roadshow team filmed at Morwellham Quay in June this year — and the results of their day in the beautiful Tamar Valley can be seen on BBC One this Sunday, October 25 at 8pm.
Among the fascinating objects unearthed by the specialists was a large, 'chocolate box' painting of a Devon scene which travelled from England to New Zealand and back again — still in remarkable condition. When the current owners moved back to the UK they had to find a house big enough to take the painting.
Memorabilia which told the story of people moving from Devon to another continent came from one visitor who brought along photos and a leaving present given to his grandfather who had worked in the local mines.
Sadly, when the mines closed he had been forced to travel to South Africa to find work. He eventually died there and the items tell a poignant story of the times.
There were also some surprising discoveries, including a brooch which cost £2 and turned out to be worth several thousand and a silver wine cooler by a famous maker which has a surprising value in spite of its imperfections.
Viewers should also watch out for one visitor who had a unique way of travelling to and from the Roadshow — in spite of the fact his item was a grandfather clock.
