THE Dartmoor Moorland Pony show was held again this year in Princetown and added to the fun of Carnival Day. The in hand judge for the day was Mrs Diana Alford who was kept busy with some quality classes proving just how popular the local breed of traditional Dartmoor ponies has become. It was nice to see some regular exhibitors along with some new faces. The winner of the Youngstock Championship came from the stallion class and was Mr and Mrs Locke?s Okeleat Las Vagas, the reserve going to Mr Howarth-Podesta?s three year old filly Trefursdon Ring o Bells. Mrs Jones and Miss Roberts? brood mare Hisley Party Girl led the adult championship and went on to take the supreme of the show, with Trefursdon Nutcracker, the winning stallion, in reserve. Once again the children?s classes proved very popular, they provide the ideal opportunity for local children to share or borrow ponies for the day. The judge, Mrs Elizabeth Newbolt-Young found her ridden champion in Mrs Heather Luckham?s mare, Burrator Concerto, who earlier won the leading rein class. Reserve went to Mrs Setter, her daughter Georgia rode Sherberton Bellever. Heather Luckham was delighted to find that she had also gained the most points during the day, to be awarded the John Coaker Memorial Trophy. She was presented with a delightful oil painting by Mrs Diana Coaker who is president of the Dartmoor Pony Society. After a misty start the sun shone to provide a glorious day out for everyone. Lots of people went home happy, laden with rosettes, trophies, raffle prizes and bunches of local carrots!
