IMMIGRATION went under the spotlight during a special discussion organised by Tavistock Quakers last week. Led by Alan Ray-Jones, the group examined the causes of migration, the benefits and problems of cultural diversity and how immigrants are treated in their host communities. The group recognised that disquiet existed about the impact of immigration on the people already living in a country ? and felt more should be done by faith groups to minimise anxiety exacerbated by emotive language and misleading statistics. A spokeswoman said: ?We should seek to emphasise the positive effects which new citizens can contribute to our society, so we can understand that the more we get to truly know and understand each other, the more we all stand to benefit.? In the words of the 17th century Quaker, George Fox, we will ?come to walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone,? she said.
