GROWN a giant marrow or a perfect onion? Are your sweet peas just reaching perfection? Have you turned your raspberries into a pot of delicious jam?

All your hard work in the garden this year could win you one of 60 cups and trophies or a rosette for the 153rd Tavistock and District Flower, Produce and Craft Show is just around the corner.

Everyone can enter the show, sponsored by Tavistock and District Gardening Club, which takes place on August 7 and 8 in the pannier market.

There are classes for children who can paint, cook or arrange flowers. And this year, to encourage young gardeners, the Royal Horticultural Society is giving gold embossed certificates for special children's categories.

Knitters, sewers, jam-makers, wine-makers, photographers and cake-makers all stand a chance of a prize. There is even a men-only class for the cake-baking males in the community.

Every year there are entries from Plymouth and Liskeard, some from Callington and Mary Tavy — just because you don't live in Tavistock, it doesn't mean that you can't enter.

Show secretary John Reynolds said: 'Some of you may be too shy to enter and think that your efforts will not be good enough. You just have to walk around the show hall and listen to the visitors: "Mine are a lot bigger than that . . . . "

'Support your local show and let your entry make this year's show the blooming best ever.'

To put something in the show, would-be entrants need to pick up a free show schedule from the Information Centre in Tavistock and complete the free entry form or telephone the entry to John Reynolds (01822 617266) before 4pm on August 3 at the latest.

Judging will take place on Monday, August 7, with prize-giving in the evening. The show will be open to the public both days.
