TWO young Gulworthy school boys, aware of the distress wreaked in their community by the foot and mouth virus, organised a mufti day for their fellow pupils last week to help raise money.
Headteacher Peter Mawer said: 'With two cases of foot and mouth disease in the area to date, local farmers and their families are awaiting future developments with anxiety and apprehension.
'At the school, where disinfectant mats are in place and the latest news is swapped at the gate, two farmers' sons Ross Edwards, 9, and Harry Steer, 8, wanted to do something to help.'
They organised the uniform-free day themselves, preparing posters and letters for parents.
Mr Mawer said they were rather anxious about the outcome, knowing the school had recently contributed to Comic Relief.
'But they were delighted when contributions of more than £80 were dropped in to their special wellie collecting box,' he said.
l Callington Lions raised a whopping £1,240 on Green Wellie day by standing outside the town's supermarket with two green wellies balanced on a pair of old-fashioned scales.
