WORK on a major road maintenance scheme on the A3124 North Tawton to Winkleigh road starts on Monday, February 6. The £330,000 project involves reconstruction and resurfacing of some sections of the road that are worn out while other sections will be patched to prepare them for surface dressing works in the summer. When the surface dressing is completed, a 4,500-metre stretch between Culm Cross and Caddition Cross will have been given a new surface. Improvements to surface water drainage are also included in the work. The works will produce almost 1,500 tonnes of old bitumen macadam which will be recycled. This will be used to extend the cycle network at Highampton and to maintain minor roads and footpaths throughout Devon. To enable the work on the A3124 to be carried out safely, the road will have to be closed for a period of three weeks from Monday, February 6. The diversion route will be from North Tawton via the A3072 to Copplestone, then via the A377 to Morchard Road and the B3220 to Winkleigh. The contractor undertaking the work is South West Highways.
