HOUSEHOLDS in Callington will be looking at an increase of less than 2% on their council tax for the next financial year, which councillors say is 'significantly lower' than the increase other local areas will face.
At a meeting of Callington's full council just before Christmas, the annual precept was ratified at 1.97%, which works out as an increase of six and a half pence per week for a Band D dwelling.
Councillors were pleased not to have to increase the precept dramatically, as a number of other councils have had to do, which they contribute to careful planning and forward thinking.
Cllr Jeremy Gist said: 'Many people will be looking at big increases this year, but we have managed to keep ours down.
'It's down to very good financial officers and the town clerk. We are not a political council and do not make decisions for political reasons, we make decisions for the good of the town.'
Portreeve Cllr Andrew Long said: 'In the coming months, many councils across Cornwall will suffer the reality of the current cuts and will see services severely reduced across their communities.
'In Callington, thanks to the forward-looking council and detailed preparation made by the clerk, we have protected the vital services such as public toilets, parks and open spaces, weed killing, cemetery work and many other areas so we can ensure a continuing service for the people.'
The town council's precept for 2015/16 is £175.26 per annum for a Band D dwelling, which is an increase of £3.38 (6.5p a week).
Cornwall Council is due to announce its precept later in the year.
