PROUD members of Okehampton Otters Swimming and Lifesaving Club received their Bronze Medallions from Club Chairman, Bob Collett at Okehampton Leisure Centre last Friday. The award marked the end of an 8 week course culminating in a stiff practical and theory examination of their ability to rescue drowning persons and to provide life support. The toughest part was a timed swim and tow of a patient that requires strong swimming ability and stamina. The 13 successful candidates were the largest group to take the examination this year. Bob Collett said 'you have shown considerable dedication and swimming strength to achieve the Royal Life Saving Society's Bronze Medallion, not only have you proved that you can look after yourselves in all water situations but you have also shown yourselves willing and able to help others'. Lifesavers meet every Friday at 6pm in term time at Okehampton Leisure Centre. Children aged 8 and over, who can swim 4 lengths, are given the opportunity to learn water safety, self rescue and how to help others. Swimming and lifesaving instruction is given during the hour session with a good dose of fun and friendship. For further information contact Tony Clark 01837 840283.
