A SPECIAL dedication ceremony in honour of the American servicemen who lost their lives at Dartmoor Prison during the war of 1812 was held on Sunday.

The service was held in the Cemetery of the American Prisoners of War, and was attended by representatives of all branches of the US military.

Over the last few years, the cemetery has been upgraded and recently two large granite stones were put in place bearing the names of all 271 POWs whom died.

Around 30 American servicemen ? navy seals, soldiers and RAF officers ? payed their respects during the 30 minute re-dedication ceremony.

The service was also attended by the current and previous prison governors.

Mike Chamberlain, Dartmoor Prison historian, said: ?It was a very, very good service. The American occupation is a completely untold story really.?
