REFERENCE the story on the creation of a public bridleway on dismantled railway: Thorndon Cross to Halwill Junction: I am saddened by the furore this proposal seems to be causing. Arguments about the minutiae of the matter seem premature when it is the principle of the idea that is currently under discussion. The principle is good. It is to enable local riders, cyclists and walkers to make full use of the existing, comprehensive network of bridleways and minor roads that are currently severed by the odiously busy A3079. The road is a horror-story for horses, bikes and walkers and they don?t use it. Not to make use of the parallel disused railway line, which would link, create and make circular routes accessible, would seem short-sighted. Devon County Council has a duty of care for its residents and could be seen as irresponsible were it not seen to be taking ideas such as this very seriously. I have every confidence that DCC will consider all the issues, whether they concern landowners, users? needs, cost or legal matters, in very great depth before any decisions are made. Recent research suggests that in the parishes of Bratton Clovelly, Sourton, Beaworthy, Halwill, Northlew and Germansweek there are currently around 320 riders, who would benefit from the proposal. The British Horse Society works toward improving off-road, safe riding routes not only for its membership but for all riders just as the Ramblers Association is constantly trying to improve the footpath network for walkers. There will be a multitude of problems, large and small, to sort out before the scheme can be implemented but I am convinced these are not insurmountable and that it is a good idea. I am happy to give it the full backing of the British Horse Society. Jenny Parsons Devon County Access and Bridleways officer for the British Horse Society Regency House Hemyock Cullompton
