THE Priest in Charge's XI got their revenge on the Curate's XI on Saturday at the Ring in Tavistock — a match that is fast becoming an annual event.
The curate's team, captained by Peter Hake, got off to a slow start, but steadied in the middle order, with Simon Hurst amassing a comfortable 52 before being bowled lbw. At tea time the curate's team were 148 all out.
After a lavish tea, provided the St Eustachius social committee, the priest in charge's team went in to bat.
At first it seemed as though they could not meet the target, then 16-year old Johnny Hake, whose father was captaining the opposing team, went in to bat. He sent ball after ball to the boundary, giving his team the victory at 153 for 6, being not out himself with 103.
This meant a victory for the priest in charge's team without the captain hitting a single ball. Johnny Hake deservedly won man of the match, before the teams adjourned to enjoy a hog roast and live music provided by the cricket club.
The whole day was entertaining and light-hearted, being much enjoyed by players and spectators alike.
