PARKING charges for visitors to Plymouth?s Derriford Hospital are on the rise again. The move, which saw ticket prices increase by as much as 60p from June 1, is part of a new scheme to free up one hundred and fifty spaces for visitors by introducing a park and ride service for hospital staff. Andrew Davies, head of environmental services for the Plymouth Health Community said that the extra revenue will also be used to cover increases in inflation, staff wages, rates and maintenance bills. Despite increased charges, the hospital is retaining the minimum day time tariff of four hours ? a decision which Mr Davies said was made after several surveys undertaken by the hospital found it to be the average duration of a visit. Mr Davies said: ?We try to keep charges as low as possible ? but with eighteen months without a rise the increase in tariff is now needed to fund the park and ride facility which we hope will make it easier and less stressful for visitors looking for somewhere to park. ?Forty four buses visit the hospital every hour and, in accordance with NHS policy, we encourage staff and, where possible, visitors to make use of them.? Car parking at Derriford is self-financing and Mr Davies said that any surplus revenue would be used to fund additional medical care. Concessionary rates are on offer to patients receiving repeat treatment, the clergy and to on-site contractors.
