TAMAR and Tavy Gig Club will be launching its new glass fibre training gig which can be used all winter to extend our training season.

The funds to buy the gig came from a sum of money which was left by a lady from the village, Belinda O'Flynn. She wished the money to be used for the benefit of the community with emphasis on young people. The club is very to grateful her and are naming the gig in her honour.

Tamar and Tavy Gig Club is a thriving club with a very active junior section based at Weir Quay. We attend regattas all over Devon and Cornwall as well as the Cornish Pilot Gig World Championships in the Isles of Scilly.'

Nick Law, rector of the parish, will bless the boat, while the naming ceremony will be undertaken by relatives and trustees of the fund.

Julie Rendle, a spokesperson, said: 'We were very fortunate to be given part of this fund. Local sea shanty group, The Tavy Tars, will sing for us and will be joined by a group from the Isles of Scilly.

'The junior section of the club will have the first row of the gig and there will be refreshments in The Old Plough Inn for trustees, relatives, press etc.
