SOME cherished vintage vehicles chugged their way up to Okehampton Camp recently during the annual memorial road run organised by the Devon branch of the Military Vehicles Trust.

The British and American vehicles, mainly dating from the second world war and including an ambulance, jeeps and a LandRover, visited the camp at the invitation of Col Tony Clark.

Peter Coaker, secretary of the trust, said: ?We hold this memorial run every year. Tony Clark invited us because he is running a heritage weekend later this year, to which we will be bringing a lot of our vehicles.

?As the gentleman in whose memory we do the road run was a Ten Tors instructor for many years, it seemed an appropriate thing to combine the two.?

Peter is hoping many more vehicles and their owners, some of whom are taking part in the 60th anniversary commemoration of the D-Day landings this summer, will be at the camp for the heritage weekend in September.

And he paid tribute to camp personnel for the warm welcome the party received ? which was in direct contrast to the pouring rain and howling wind on the day of their visit.

?We?ve definitely seen the camp at its worst!? he said.
