AS the days become shorter and the nights draw in, Age Concern has published a practical guide to help older people in West Devon protect their homes from the perils of winter.

Age Concern Plymouth has published the guide, entitled ?A Practical Guide for Protecting and Maintaining Your Home?. The free of charge guide gives advice to older people on how to prepare their home for winter, how to cope with storm damage and what to do if pipes burst.

These recommendations include:

l Make sure you know where your mains water stop valve is and you can turn it on and off in case of a burst pipe.

l Make sure tanks and pipes are properly lagged and repair any dripping taps.

l Ensure fences and gates are properly maintained and repaired to minimise damage caused by strong winds.

Mary Fulton from Age Concern Plymouth said: ?Homeowners need to take action now to ensure their home is protected this winter and these simple steps can make a real difference.?
