A TAVISTOCK based community wind band which boasts 50 members is holding a charity concert featuring an exciting range of music in the town hall on Friday, March 18 (writes Rebecca Jewels). Blowzone was set up five years ago under the direction of woodwind teacher Steve Smith with the main intention of promoting music-making in the area. The band has a varied repertoire suitable for all ages and abilities, encouraging members to improve their skills and confidence. Recruitment is mainly through word-of-mouth and, in some cases, whole families play together in the band. As well as those local to Tavistock, members come from as far afield as Okehampton and Wadebridge. At just 10 years old, Ann-Louise Jones is probably the youngest member of Blowzone but she already has a foot on the ladder to musical greatness. Ann, who has been playing the clarinet for three years has already passed Grade 6 and has been invited to join some of the best young musicians in the country in the National Children?s Orchestra. Ann, from Bere Alston, has also successfully auditioned for a place this September at the prestigious Chetham?s School, a specialist music school in Manchester. She said that she will be sad to leave her friends in Blowzone but she would recommend joining the group to others as she feels it has helped improve her playing. Blowzone have performed previously at various local events such as the Balloon Fiesta, carnival and school fetes. They have also played in a church concert with the Stannary Band, at HMS Drake in Plymouth and at Sterts, the open air theatre at Upton Cross. In the summer they will entertain the holidaymakers on the quay side at Padstow. The band also supports smaller ensembles within the group such as Flute Cocktail a flute choir, and Saxmania, a saxophone ensemble. For those wishing to improve their skills, they have run workshops in conducting and jazz improvisation. The town hall concert will feature a range of music from classical, jazz and popular as well as highlights from films and musicals. The selection includes Stevie Wonder, West Side Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, songs from Grease and a tribute to Glen Miller. Flute Cocktail will perform a small collection of pieces from Rossini to Mozart. Blowzone hold rehearsals fortnightly on Thursday evenings at Tavistock College.
