THE last game of the season is perhaps better forgotten, as Tavistock made one of their longest journeys of the season to Porthleven losing 4-0, Porthleven cementing their runners-up spot in the league.

However, Tavistock has had one of their best league finishes for many seasons, finishing in eighth spot and really putting the Devonshire cream on the Tamar Valley strawberries with victory in the Devon Premier Cup the week before.

Bank Holiday Monday saw Tavistock play host to the Carlsberg South West League Cup final for the first time in its history — further cream went on the scones when the match ended in a draw and Tavistock had the benefit of a replay on Thursday evening, when St Blazey defeated Liskeard 3-1.

Robin Fenner, Tavistock's chairman, said: 'I would like to thank everybody that turned out to handle the very large number of cars, the backroom staff and stewards in the club who made overwhelming profits for the club with food and bar takings and congratulate everybody concerned in completing such a momentous season.'

Mr Fenner also paid tribute to Craig Smith and Chris Abbot for their 'jovial' management of the team.

'To finish eighth out of 19 teams is really commendable. They have kept things light hearted but on the pitch it's deadly serious,' said Mr Fenner.
