Powdermills Pottery near Princetown has been chosen to represent Devon in a national campaign for locally distinctive souvenirs. Souvenirs are an important part of the region?s economy, and the national organisation Common Ground has sought examples that are locally distinctive, well designed and proud ambassadors of the place in which they are found. The organisation launched a pamphlet last week to celebrate good souvenirs nationwide, called ?Producing the Goods ? Souvenirs in Particular?. Joss Hibbs, resident potter at Powdermills Pottery, makes tableware and kitchenware intended for every day use. The pots are made from Dartmoor clays, and are glazed using ingredients such as river gravel from the nearby stream. In their pamphlet, Common Ground describes the pots as ?simple, elegant, warm-coloured pottery of excellent quality, which is functional and has a story to tell?. Joss is delighted her work has been chosen to represent Dartmoor. She said: ?I applaud this campaign to find souvenirs that reflect our region. ?Visitors like to buy locally-made momentoes, rather than the box of fudge from afar with a local postcard on the front, and in doing so they bring added benefit to local designers, makers and manufacturers.? The showroom at Powdermills sells Joss?s pots, and the work of a further 30 craft-makers who hand-make useful, crafted home-wares on the moor.
