A TAVISTOCK town councillor has applauded a decision to bin a scheme for a new rubbish collection, after describing it as ‘discriminatory’ to some residents.
Cllr James Ellis said he congratulated West Devon Borough Council on dropping the idea following an 18-month trial of a three-weekly black sack collection.
The decision meant all West Devon households revert to once a fortnight collections from this month after the conclusion of the trial, which began last February in parts of the borough.
It is was designed to provide the council with information on whether they should roll the scheme out to the rest of the borough.
But they decided not to go ahead after changes to the country’s waste strategy and the national shortage of lorry drivers which has resulted in some rubbish collections being missed.
Cllr Ellis, at the latest meeting of Tavistock Town Council, said he felt the scheme was discrimatory towards some sections of the population, particularly those who lived in flats.
The trial was carried out with 1,000 residents in Tavistock, Okehampton and Bridestowe, although the council, who were aiming at increasing recyling, have not entirely ruled out revisiting the idea in the future.
A council spokesperson said: We will continue to monitor the nature of the waste collected in the Borough and how this could impact a move to three-weekly collection in the future.
