POLICE are warning the public about the danger of live firing ranges on Dartmoor after an incident on Saturday (September 6) where people put themselves at risk. At approximately 9.30pm, police said a white four-wheel drive pick-up was seen driving on Black Down with people firing from the vehicle at rabbits on the Willsworthy live firing range. The live firing flags were showing and the Royal Marines were live firing on the range. PCSO Chapple said it was 'mind-boggling' that anyone would drive onto the range and start shooting rabbits. 'There are gates at the entrance to Willsworthy and flags that are always up when there is any firing activity going on,' he said. 'It is important that people are aware of the dangers and stay clear of the live firing ranges when the flags are up.' There are live firing ranges on Dartmoor at Okehampton, Willsworthy and Merrivale and they are more frequently used during the autumn and winter months to avoid the tourist season. It is against the law to fire guns on open moorland. Police would like to hear from anyone who has information regarding this incident on the 101 number. The incident log number is 0859 06/09/14.
