POLICE units from Exeter, Chudleigh and Tavistock were called in to help deal with a disturbance in Okehampton Town Centre at the weekend involving around 50 people and local police officers.

Police were called to Fore Street at 1.20am after a report that a brawl was taking place.

On arrival one youth is alleged to have thrown a roadwork cone at one of the police vehicles and as officers went to arrest him they were surrounded by a group of people shouting abuse.

Sgt Preston said the disturbance escalated a little but once more units arrived the group started to disperse.

'There were about 12 police cars at the scene but officers from Torbay were also on standby,' he said.

Two officers were allegedly assaulted and two police cars damaged.

Okehampton police are appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

The sergeant said videos were being obtained from various premises in the town and statements were being taken from all the officers.

He confirmed that there would be a high police presence in the town at the weekends.

Two men have been charged by police in connection with the incident.
