POLICE are appealing to anyone who was in the area of Mill Bridge in Chagford and may have witnessed an elderly woman fall from the bridge into the river.
At 8.30pm on Saturday, September 25, an ambulance was called to the area after it was reported than an elderly woman had fallen from the bridge and into the shallow river below.
On arrival a 70-year-old old local lady was found having fallen between 20 and 25 feet from the narrow seven-foot wide road bridge. The lady was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where she was diagnosed with a fracture to her pelvis and numerous cuts and bruises.
A 43-year-old local man was subsequently arrested and questioned in connection with the incident. He has since been released on police bail.
The investigating officer Det Sgt Gleed of Tavistock Police Station is appealing for anyone who may have been in the area of the bridge between about 7.30pm and 8.30pm to get in contact.
Police believe there were vehicles travelling in the area at that time and would ask those drivers to come forward especially if they saw anyone walking in the vicinity of the bridge.
