WITH the recent heat people may be tempted to leave their windows and doors open — but police are reminding residents to be careful.

Sgt Dave Anning at Tavistock Police Station said: 'Please don't leave downstairs windows open at the front of the house where people can easily check out whether you are in or not.

'On the bright side, despite the moors being very busy, we haven't had cars broken into lately. But it will happen so keep your eyes peeled. Thieves working on the moor have vehicles. If you see people who look out of place on the moor, please take a registration number and call the police — one call could stop a small crime-wave.'

Sgt Anning is also asking people to note down the vehicle registration numbers of people who visit their homes, following a number of incidents where people have turned up on doorsteps, offering to buy or sell tools or looking for metal.

'A number of thefts have been reported within days of these sorts of visits,' said Sgt Anning.

'It is thought that one of the reasons people are not noting the registrations is that some may be foreign.

'Even if no crime is committed, please note the registration number and call the police on 101, so we can build up a picture of which individuals are operating where.'
