I HAVE never been inclined to follow the hunt and as a geriatric I don?t think I will be starting now. However, having lived in English shires during my adult life I have never felt the need to interfere with the legitimate lifestyle of those who have inherited the lifestyle of their forefathers. It is about time chief constables remembered the old adage that the police can only do their work with the consent of the public. Should the public withhold their support for the police even to the extent of giving them directions to a location they are seeking, they will be stymied. It is not something country folk like to do as many have relations in the police. It is time chief constables stopped behaving like the two gendarmes and warned the Government that by passing an act deliberately aimed against the interests of the English country people by the use of ?flying pickets?, ie, Scots and Welsh MPs who have their own legislation and also MPs from English urban areas, it is they themselves who will be responsible for causing a breach of the peace. If MPs from the Celtic fringe and urban areas think they can treat people from the shires as peasants, they should reflect on what happens when the peasants start to revolt. When an Englishman?s ire is raised there is no stopping him and he shows no mercy until the fight is over. J W Reid Limehayes Road, Okehampton
