POLICE are appealing for witnesses to incidents over the weekend of October 27/28 where a disabled woman was physically and verbally assaulted in Okehampton by two men.

The woman, who is in a wheelchair, was assaulted outside the post office on the Saturday at around 2.45pm and the following day at her flat in Station Road at 3pm.

DC Paul Leahy said somebody intervened in the street during the first incident and he is hoping that person will come forward.

At the woman's flat the offenders were disturbed by voices at the door and made off.

'We are taking this very seriously — it appears that this lady was victimised for reasons unknown,' he said. 'We do not know how far it would have gone had they not been disturbed.'

Police have issued descriptions of the two males as follows — the first was white, 30-35 years of age, 5ft 8ins, medium build, with short, dark, straight, neatly cut hair and stubble. He appeared muscular and had piercing dark eyes and tattoos, one of his left forearm which appeared to be a military symbol with text underneath and the other on the right upper arm was an eagle in flight, in predominantly blue colouring. He wore a denim waistcoat and white T-shirt.

The second male was of similar age, a little taller and of slimmer build. He had well groomed, short, dark, gelled hair and stubble and wore a sleeper in his right ear.

His nose was elongated and looked as if it had been broken at some stage. He wore blue jeans, a black waistcoat and waist-length leather jacket with metal badges on it and a dirty, white T-shirt.

Anyone with information should call 08705 777444 and ask for DC Leahy at Okehampton CID.
