FOR the second time in a fortnight vandals have struck in South Zeal, this time wreaking havoc at the village?s snooker club. A seat in the village centre, placed there in memory of local shopkeeper Bill Holman, was recently vandalised and the pavilion in South Zeal?s recreation ground suffered vandalism and theft during last weekend. Distressed snooker club member and key-holder Charles Curtis said the vandalism was discovered on Saturday morning when he went to open the club. He found the door to the pavilion was already open and went inside to find chairs thrown on the snooker table and around the floor although it is hoped that little damage was done to the actual playing cloth. Snooker balls from two sets belonging to the snooker club that cost around £130 each have gone missing, many balls were found thrown into gardens close to the pavilion. A partly discharged fire extinguisher, water soaked paper and cushions had been thrown around and the facility?s clock had been stolen only to be thrown away nearby. Mr Curtis said club members were disappointed to see the premises that were only opened last year, being the target for vandals. The need for a different type of door security system for the building is likely to be high on the agenda for consideration at the next meeting of the snooker club committee. Snooker players were in the pavilion enjoying their game on Friday evening and it is hoped people in the vicinity later in the evening may have seen something. Police are appealing for anyone who saw anything that evening to come forward with information.
