HIGHWAYS company Cormac and Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for information on the driver of a large lorry after damage was caused to three bridges is East Cornwall.

Two Bridges near Launceston, Clapper Baypark Bridge and Clapper Bridge in Pillaton, between Callington and Tideford were damaged by a large lorry on Monday, July 6.

Clapper Baypark Bridge is a Grade II listed structure and was presumed to be built in the 18th or 19th century. Clapper Bridge is an ancient monument built around the 16th century.

A spokesperson for Cormac said: 'The driver who didn't stop and report the damage ignored signs for a seven foot width restriction order on the bridges and the bollards on the approach to the bridges to restrict the width of vehicles using them have also been damaged.

'Repairs to the bridges are expected to be around £45,000 and the driver and his insurance should cover this but police are currently investigating to identify the driver.'

Anyone with any information about this incident should contact the police on 101.

Repairs were due to start this week, subject to emergency listed building consent being granted and the road closure and diversion route will be in place for the duration of the works.
