DEVON 1

Totnes 5

Tavistock 95

TAVISTOCK, with only five league games left, three of which are at home, took a giant step closer to the Devon I league title with this demolition of a plucky Totnes side on Saturday.

Tavistock started like an express train, scoring 68 unanswered points by the break, and looked certain to break the 100-point barrier.

But Totnes rallied in the second half and limited free-scoring Tavistock.

The final try tally was 17, but the normally reliable Neil Evans and Josh Sutton had an off-day with their kicking, with only five conversions.

Once again the foundation was laid by the Tavistock pack with powerful scrummaging, efficient lineout play and good support in the loose where the back row of Matt Cole, Tom Dawe and Jude Rotton were always prominent.

This base allowed Tavistock a first half of free flowing 15-man rugby with fly half Neil Evans leading the way with four tries.

Totnes shook Tavistock early in the second half when their forwards forced their way over for a score which seemed to improve their morale and they pressured the Tavistock defence.

But solid tackling ensured no further scores were leaked and Tavistock went on to score five more tries.

In addition to the four scored by Evans other tries were scored by Mike Lyddon (2), Jude Rotton (2), Duncan Law (2), Lee Greatrex(2), Tom Hurdwell (2) and a try apiece from Mark Baker and second row forwards Lee Easton and Andy Hunt.

This week sees Tavistock entertain Topsham in the league, kick off 2.30pm at Sandy Park.
