MOST of us shop in supermarkets and are beginning to be aware of the way many people in developing countries (including children) who work in difficult conditions picking, packing and sewing and earning as little as 5p an hour.

Recently, the Competition Commission recommended that an independent ombudsman should be established to help combat these abuses.

The only supermarket that has agreed voluntarily to this is Waitrose so it is now in the hands of the government — with Lord Mandelson as the minister concerned — as to whether this proposal should be made mandatory.

Action Aid is asking people in the south west to join the campaign by visiting  to make sure the abuse is halted and that the profits of the big business supermarkets don't benefit from the exploitation of those not able to defend themselves.

I wonder if its possible for readers to spend just a few moments to add their voice to this cause.
