AN AMBITIOUS plan to revamp the Saltash Road Recreation Ground in Callington has been drawn up and the public will be consulted shortly.

The draft masterplan by Westley Design of Penryn was commissioned by Callington Town Council, which is keen to change the look of the park over the next few years.

Play equipment for the older children had to be removed recently because of its condition, so facilities for the 8-14-year-olds will be the first priority.

The designers have created a series of interconnected spaces of varying sizes. These consist of outdoor rooms hosting a range of activities from large flexible open spaces intended for events and expansive recreation to intimate places of quiet repose or sheltered play.

The plans show gentle mounding and tiering of the site and tree planting, covered seating areas, a grass amphitheatre, willow dens, climbing banks and nest swings and scramble nets and carved wooden animal log bench seating.

Dog management issues would be dealt with by provision or peripheral, fenced dog areas with the rest of the park and play areas remaining unfenced.

Town clerk Vernon Anderson said the plan would be discussed by the council's direct services committee before being presented to the public.

There has been a series of public events leading up to the production of the plan where children and parents have said what they would like to see in the park in the future. The masterplan is based on those comments.

Town clerk Vernon Anderson said: 'The councillors will give their feedback and then there will be a public consultation to see what the reaction is.

'The plan is ambitious and there are many elements to it. The children's play areas are spread right across the park because we wanted maximum use of the park. Once we have done the consultation we can start to take some of the plan forward.

'This is a long term plan and it will be done in stages. Hopefully, we can secure some external funding to add to the £40,000 we secured through the Playbuilder Fund.'
