PUB chain J D Wetherspoon has won approval from West Devon planners to refurbish and extend the London Inn in Okehampton's West Street. Members of the planning committee said the ambitious plans by the company which include the demolition of outbuildings and the erection of two-storey extensions would 'dramatically improve' the site. There were objections from local publicans who said the introduction of a large scale company would be detrimental to their businesses but ward members said it could only be good for Okehampton. Cllr Marsh said the concerns raised including the potential noise and highways impact were 'rubbish': 'There will not be an over provision of licensed premises because it is a licensed premises now so what is the difference. The same goes for noise and traffic. 'As for a large scale company moving in - look what Waitrose did for Okehampton. This application is a big improvement on the whole area and Okehampton is waiting for Wetherspoons to arrive.' Cllr Bill Cann said the design for the pub was very good: 'I think we should welcome this because it will do Okehampton a bit of good. 'It may be competition but it will pull people into Okehampton and give some business to the west side of the town.' Planning permission was refused for the redevelopment of the public house and land at the rear into 14 flats in 2006. Several conditions were placed on the planning permission including a restriction on the level of noise.
