THE Friends of the Wharf at Tavistock have won a grant of £2,000 for the Pigmania project.
The money will come from the Devon Community Foundation and is to be used to contribute to a replacement of the carpet in the public areas of the Wharf and to buy some new crockery for the poetry readers' group and some new chairs.
Angela and Stephen Court, directors of the Wharf, said they were delighted the centre was receiving recognition for the wide range of community events and projects which are now hosted there.
It is hoped the carpet will be replaced before the Tavistock Sings Music and Arts Festival April 28 to May 4 for which many of the events will be held at the Wharf.
The Pigmania project has also been hosted at Tavistock Library which has displays of the poems and art work from the community — this now includes decorated pig masks from Whitchurch Brownies and art work from Mount House School and the Youth Café Plus.
The library will also host a play reading by the First Tuesday play readers of the Nelson Bond adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm today (Thursday) at 7pm.
The winners of the children's art work for the best in each class will be announced at the Tilly Whims fashion show to be held at the Bedford Hotel Gallery 26 on Sunday March 29 at 2pm. This event will also be raising funds for the children's hospice and the Friends of the Wharf with an auction of pig sculpture and art donated by the Tavistock community.
Pictured left with the cheque is Dr Ann Pulsford, chairman of the Friends, who spearheaded the Pigmania project, which has also received grants from TaVi, Tavistock and Villages Initiative.
