WEST Devon could lose 41 phone boxes under proposals announced by BT.

Consultation is being carried out through West Devon Borough Council and parish councils have been approached for their comments.

The consultation can be viewed, together with a full list of the phone boxes which could be removed, on the borough's website at http://www.westdevon.gov.uk/payphones">www.westdevon.gov.uk/payphones and is available at the council offices in Tavistock and Okehampton.

All the comments which have been received so far have been fed into this draft decision and further comments are sought in order to compile the Council's final decision.

The draft decision is subject to a further one-month period of consultation which ends on September 1.

BT has also announced that a further six boxes in the borough will be removed without consultation because there is another box within 400 metres.

Cllr David Weeks, chairman of the borough's overview and scrutiny committee, said: 'We have our concerns about the way rural communities will be affected by these proposals, especially those who have poor mobile phone signals. We would encourage everyone to make their views known to enable us to include them in the decision we have to submit.'
