ORCHARD owners will have the opportunity to learn the correct technique for pruning their trees at a special workshop in Bere Ferrers next week.

The Tamar Valley Services will be holding an Orchard Workshop Pruning Day next Wednesday (July 23), starting at Hallowell, Bere Ferrers, before moving on to orchards at Greystone and Shutecombe.

The day will begin at 9.30am with an introductory talk by Charles Stanniland, an expert in all aspects of orchard care and maintenance.

Afterwards, there will be a visit to the orchard and the chance for hands-on experience of pruning and maybe some limb removal from both old and young trees.

Charles Stanniland will discuss the merits of different tools and give instruction on pruning.

The workshop will also teach people about the value of a traditional orchard as a rich and varied wildlife habitat and the economic contribution they can make.

Prior booking is essential as places, costing £10, are limited.

Although tea and coffee will be available on arrival, people attending are advised to bring a packed lunch.
