DOZENS of people braved a stormy New Year's day to witness the final stage in the restoration of Peter Tavy's mediæval cross.

Some 50 villagers past and present, with representatives from Dartmoor National Park, the Dartmoor Trust and the Lions Club of Tavistock gathered in the pouring rain at midday on January 1 for a short service of celebration.

The cross, believed to have been built in the 14th or 15th centuries, was taken down in the 1840s, to allow carriages to turn at the gate to St Peter's church. Parts of it disappeared, other stones, including the crown stone, were incorporated into the church wall.

They were recovered and stone masons from St Ann's Chapel completed the restoration with granite provided by Dartmoor National Park from the Merrivale Quarry.

l Pictured with the cross are the Rev Jeffrey Moles, Peter Tavy Methodist minister, Major Bill Lane, chairman of the parish council, and the Rev Ian Sykes, rector of Peter Tavy.
